Like with most debates there are those who see immigration as a negative. This point of view comes from the belief that immigrants cause overpopulation and also lead to more crime. Roy Beck, a public policy analyst stated, “chief difficulties that America faces because of current immigration are not triggered by who the immigrants are but by how many they are”. Like most of the stakeholders in this debate, the argument revolves around their being too many immigrants. Many claims are made that the surge of incoming immigrants is more then the United States can handle. When people look at their communities, they see a transformation taking place in which they often do not recognize the community as their own. In contrast to those who see a benefit with the assimilation of immigrants, this group feels that their very foundation for way of life is being corrupted. The culture as they knew it has changed and the people find it hard to fit in society. According to Susps.org, Immigration is the largest factor contributing to population growth in the U.S, contributing over 2.25 million people to the U.S. population annually.
Another claim to support the consequences of immigration is the widening gap between social classes. The Council of Economic Advisors told the President, “ immigration has increased the relative supply of less educated labor and appears to have contributed to the increasing inequality of income”.The explanation is that immigrants take over low paying jobs which skews the social classes. Jobs are being taken from America's vulnerable citizens which leads to more poverty. On top of that there is the idea that immigrants lead to more criminal activity because of the poverty they live in and cause. Through this drug trafficking and immigration are strongly correlated because most of the illegal drugs that enter the United States originate outside the country. Thousands of undocumented immigrants from various countries work as couriers, smuggling narcotic and other banned drugs into the United States. According to the WashingtonExaminer Pete Kasperowicz, illegal immigrants were responsible for almost three-fourths of federal drug possession sentences in 2014. From these points it is easy to see why such a large group of people think immigration has more consequences than benefits
